Pioneer Press, based in Glenview, Ill., serves the suburbs of Chicago with more than 60 community newspapers. It has several other Illinois offices in Waukegan, Oak Park, Hinsdale, Arlington Heights and Park Ridge. In 2005, Hollinger merged the 80-year-old Lerner Newspapers chain into Pioneer Press, Pioneer's first real inroads into the city of Chicago. Pioneer, which also publishes North Shore magazine, began taking over the Daily Southtown magazine in 2006. It operates a corporate office and distribution center in St. Paul, Minn., with more than 500 employees.
