Founded in 1968, we're one of the best known neighborhood car rental companies in the world but we still get calls from people every day, asking "Do you really rent wrecks?"

The vehicles we rent may look a little more like the car you drive everyday than one plucked right off the showroom floor, but our clean, well maintained fleet of cars, trucks and vans are far from wrecks! We hope that our funny name helps you to remember us, and our low costs rentals and high quality customer service will earn your business.

Whether you need a rental vehicle for business, pleasure or something in-between, when you need to rent a car, truck or van, try Rent-A-Wreck across the United States and internationally.

Watch Out!

When you rent a car from this company they don't have the same procedures as other rental companies. Instead of putting a hold on your card for the $350 then releasing the hold and charging the card for the balance owed, they actually charge the card for the full $350 right away. When you return the car the unused balance is credited back to your card. This is not necessarily bad, but it's procedurally unusual. If you're using a debit card this can cause a real problem. They don't tell you this is the case. What it means is that if you are using a debit card it will be several days after you return the car that the funds are back in your account. If you're not aware of this it could cause a problem. The excuse I was given for this is that it takes 28 days for a hold to be released. This is an absurd assertion. Whether you're renting a car, a u-haul truck or a hotel room, it's standard procedure to place a hold on the card, then release and collect the balance upon checkout/return. Anything else is unusual and, for me anyway, not acceptable. I will not do business with this company again.

So-So rental

I rented the car for three days for local use only. I requested an automatic and they charged me $5 more/day. The car smelled like smoke; I even tried to spray Fabreeze to remove the smell. The owner was very pleasant, but the savings was not worth the rental. I could not wait to give it back. Also, there was an "engine check" light on the whole time and the odometer got stuck several times. Heather

Better than the rest

Mty car broke down on the NJ turnpike at 6:30 while I was on my way to make a very important sales call the next morning for my telecom business. The tow truck driver that responded gave me the numbers of a couple of car rental places in town, but when I called the first was closed and the second in the process of closing. As a last resort I called Rent-A-Wreck, Mark at the Scotch Plains office told me they normally close at 7pm, but that he would stay open to get me in the car and on my way. Then he offered to drive the vehicle out to my hotel and meet me there to do the rental. I ended up with a good, clean Ford Focus to make my sales visit first thing the next day. Since I am in sales myself, I understand how important it is to spread the word when a company does well, too often all they hear are from the complaints! Great Job - Tim Brodsky, Williamsport, PA

Their posting in the yellowpages.com site said that they serve the VA Beach area but when I typed the zip code in the first time and then the actual city in the second time I got locations in other states.

UNSAFE cars

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! I dont mind renting an older car but the rates are not that great! Could get better on HOTWIRE or advance rentals from the BIG companies such as DOLLAR. The key was bent and didnt open all the doors. The Check Engine light was on which they stated was a "minor" thing. I got stopped by LAPD for a nonworking tail light AND (R) blinker light. Do they say sorry? Do they compensate you for your inconvenience? RIP OFF!
